Practicing a sport during my internship

Practicing a Sports during my internship in Málaga? Good decision or a total flop?

My name is Mirthe and I am 20 years old. I’m doing an internship for four months at the JongLeren.es internship agency in the office. I’m not the biggest sports freak, but I do get energy from exercising and this way I can clear my head.

Goals

One of my goals, before my internship started, was to take out a subscription at a gym in the area. I had done some research beforehand and came across Basic-Fit, a 10-minute walk from my apartment. Not quite Spanish, but familiar. Because a large number of my housemates had had a subscription with Basic-Fit for some time, the choice was quickly made. A few days after arrival I immediately registered.

How does it work at the gym

When I wanted to pick up the pass before I started exercising for the first time, it took forever. It turned out that I had entered Basic-Fit in The Hague as a permanent gym in the system. As a result, I would not be able to get a pass here in Spain and the whole subscription was pointless. Stupid of course, but I could have imagined that this wouldn’t work. No idea what the Basic-Fit employee did, but after fifteen minutes he managed to hand me a card. I could finally start exercising!

You can reserve a time slot for 30, 60 and 90 minutes via the app. Personally I always go for 90 minutes, you then have enough time and there is actually no attention to whether you keep to the agreed time.

Sports during Corona

At the moment it is mandatory in Málaga to wear a face mask in the gym. That is anything but comfortable and you will also be immediately informed if the mask is even slightly under your nose. Which of course makes sense, but taking a breather after a sprint on the treadmill is not the intention.

Estimation error

What I underestimated a bit is that I thought I could immediately continue training with my training schedules that I had made in the Netherlands. You first have to get to know the layout of the gym, find out which machines they have/which they don’t have and what you can still physically handle from training in the Netherlands after coming here and sitting at different restaurants to eat pasta, pizza and the real thing. Eat Spanish dishes such as paella and tapas.

Conclusion

I notice that after an internship day I like to physically pop after using my head all day. So it was a good idea to take out a subscription with Basic-Fit!

Tip

Register in the Netherlands and pick up your pass there or enter the address of the accommodation where you will be staying. Good luck!
