Social work – Toon

My name is Toon Hendriks and I am 20 years old. I am studying social work and from February till April I have done my internship at an international school in Benalmádena.

You may think ‘that’s a weird place to do an internship as a social worker’, but it worked out really well! You learn how to deal with people with special needs, it’s perfect to improve your language skills and you are able to see the problems in an organization which you aren’t able to see in any other work placement. It was very interesting to find my own way and handle these things.

Besides that for me it was also the first experience with living on my own. You have to think about a lot of things, things my parents usually organize. For example, I was shocked that all the supermarkets are closed on Sunday! I had changed my whole routine and I didn’t know anyone, at the beginning it was hard to get used to that idea. I was lucky to have a roommate.

New people

After a week I was getting used to the new environment. From there on everything went great. I met a lot of new people because of I got to know the area and the Spanish people are really helpful even though they do not always speak English. The way of living is entirely different. Way more relaxed, which sometimes makes it difficult to organize stuff, but in a way it’s also really comforting.

It was an amazing experience and I would definitely recommend it to everyone! Last advice; be prepared where you’ll end up, you can miss a lot of things from your hometown.
